Translated by Tal Nitzán, Aliza Raz, Irit Sela, Vivian Eden

1

Possibilities

– Suppose you are lying on your side for a long time, it’s almost November and you are still on the same side, your cheek already hurts, your ear hurts too, your neck is twisted, your ribs are smashed and your whole body is screaming ‘enough’.
– I’ll turn to the other side.
– Suppose you don’t have another side.

I sit by the edge of a swimming pool, dipping my feet in the deep water. Someone pushes me in. Perhaps he wouldn’t have done it had he known I can’t swim, I think on the way down. I sink till my toes touch the bottom and then I rise. I pull my head out of the water and know that now I should  scream “Help!” before I go under again, but I forgot what country I’m in and what language I’m supposed to shout in.

3

She who was born devoid of a mother tongue
shall always walk
in her own wake

carrying her cellar on her head
her home will not know
it’s her home

At times a dead bird
will lay itself at her feet
posing as
a seductive autumn leaf –

The long-ago-candy is still melting in her mouth
the rusty nail is still piercing her throat
She who was born devoid of a mother tongue
will never let go of the child’s.

This

Now this has
a life of its own,
a malignant life of its own,
and the known or unknown
can’t rule it,
and if repressed,
it will erupt again, always
more savage, more grasping
with its imaginary hand
at the non-imaginary throat,
and there’s nothing lucid enough
to separate this
from what isn’t this.
Sometimes there’s nothing
that isn’t this.

The Canary
(Interior Design)

We’ll move the canary from the kitchen to the bath
we’ll move the computer from the terrace to the kitchen
the boy with his room will move to the terrace
we’ll push our bed to the corner in his room
we’ll place the girl in the remaining space
we’ll take another job
we’ll take another loan
we’ll sleep a little less
we’ll ask for a last reprieve
we’ll wipe from our hearts
the beloved memory of
the stolen car
the lost wallet
the broken window
and if it’s cramped we’ll push
and if it’s bitter we’ll sweeten
and if it’s about to crack
we’ll reach out our arms and tighten all around.

Translated by Tal Nitzán, Gerardo Lewin, Florinda F. Goldberg

1

Posibilidades

T.N.

4

Eso

Ahora eso tiene
vida propia,
maligna vida propia,
lo conocido y lo desconocido
no pueden dominarlo,
y si fuera reprimido
volvería a estallar, siempre
más asolador,
más aferrada la mano imaginaria
a la garganta no-imaginaria,
y no hay nada bastante lúcido
para separar eso
de lo que no es eso.
A veces no hay nada
que no sea eso.

T.N.

tomaremos otro medio empleo
tomaremos otro medio préstamo
renunciaremos a otra hora de sueño
pediremos otra última prórroga
borraremos del alma el
recuerdo querido de
el auto robado
el monedero perdido
la ventana rota
y si se estrecha ampliaremos
y si se amarga endulzaremos
y si empieza a agrietarse
tenderemos los brazos y lo rodearemos todo.
