toca Stairway to Heaven
    ¿una escalera al cielo?
    ¿altar a las alturas
    para un secreto
    matrimonio musical?
ella sonríe grata y me despide
finalmente! / y lágrimas me suben
a los ojos cuando empiezo a bajar

Marriage of heaven and earth

Written in Spanish by Pablo Ingberg

Translated into English by Beatriz Chivite Ezkieta

I wander aimlessly around
the historic heart: the arcade
of an old building reveals
an interior courtyard filled
with whispers of joy: a snow white bride
and her dark consort photogenic pose
while two little blowing angels
like the ones on old maps
surround them from both sides
with soap bubbles galore:
         the ephemeral shine
doesn’t seem like an encouraging omen
(let them be happy while it lasts)
Places thought as notes
for improvisation appear to me:
I get a gift that the heart
on the other side of the ocean
is asking me for: perfumes
so our clothes smell like flowers
from renewed springs |I enter
into an immense church:
it lights me up with familiarity
(it is not an opinion: it is the broth
where one has been cooked
for better and for worse)
I then decide to start the ascent
towards a castle: Montebello:
a memory of ancient boundaries
between familiar and possible outsider
seen as potential enemy
(against the insider there is no wall
that is worth as we know
and in the end
there are no eternal walls) / Up hill
the ascent is not so hard
and it’s worth centuries-old stones
and visions of extended landscapes
that spread to the borders of the imaginable
I decide to redouble: to continue the ascent
to yet another castle: a higher peak
As I arrive I hear harp music:
through the arcade I see a blonde
(beautiful as an angel by Raphael
frescoed on the wall of a chapel)
sitting with the sweet instrument
between her legs and with her fingers
caressing the strings
making them sing of joy and enjoyment
I peek to see: there is another marriage
in the castle courtyard: wedding day
Neither the tourists nor those celebrating
seem to pay attention to the angelic harp
When it ends I clap my hands
in silence and the angel
smiles back at me: I’m the only one
listening to her message: soon after
she plays Stairway to Heaven
    a stairway to heaven?
    an altar on the heights
    for a secret
    musical marriage?
An the end we exchange our sign languages:
I beat my heart with my hand, slightly bow of the head
and raise my arm vaguely as a farewell:
she smiles pleasantly and says goodbye
leaving me to life again \ When I am about to begin
the descent I see a somehow older
married couple: he leans
panting on the railing and I tell them:
arrivati finalmente! and he smiles and catches a breath:
finalmente! / and tears come up
onto my eyes when I start to go down

Mariage du ciel et de la terre

Written in Spanish by Pablo Ingberg

Translated into French by François-Michel Durazzo

Je sors me promener sans but
elle me baigne d’une lumière familière
(ce n’est pas un avis : c’est le bouillon
dans lequel on a mijoté
pour le meilleur et pour le pire)
J’entreprends alors l’ascension
vers un château : Montebello,
souvenir d’anciennes limites
elle joue Stairway to Heaven
un escalier vers le ciel ?
    autel vers les hauteurs
    pour un secret
    mariage musical ?
elle me sourit reconnaissante me renvoie
finalmente! / et je commence
ma descente des larmes dans les yeux

Argentine writer and translator Pablo Ingberg during his time as a guest in Bellinzona for the Babel 2021 festival, discovered the vertical dimension of the Ticino town. The historic center of Bellinzona is in fact overlooked by three castles, placed one on top of the other and partly connected by a wall that has long marked not only a political-administrative border but also a linguistic one.

We thank Pablo Ingberg for allowing us to present his poem here, almost as an invitation to our readers to come to Bellinzona for the next edition of Babel, from the 15th to the 18th of September 2022.
