Venticinque

Ingiuria i cavalli e fa insinuazioni sui cani.

Twenty-Five and Forty-Three from Centuria

Written in Italian by Giorgio Manganelli

Translated into English by Henry Martin

Twenty-Five

The gentleman dressed in a slightly rumpled blue suit, and who at this moment is crossing the badly lit street, his footstep slightly tottering, is in fact completely drunk, and his goal is simply to get back home. It is not remarkable for him to be drunk, though in general he decorously holds his wine; the remarkable thing is the type of drunkenness from which he suffers. In general, he turns argumentative, obstinate, captious, and easily takes offense; he insults unassuming women, and turns his eyes toward municipal policemen with a certain timid arrogance. He makes nasty remarks about horses, and insinuations concerning dogs. In general these are moments in which he is convinced of living in a sordid society that deserves to be loathed and ridiculed. Tonight, thanks to that body of occult laws which not infrequently guide a series of debaucheries, he has come to regard himself as a part of that world which deserves contempt. He is responsible, and Tibet, original sin, and the class struggle all clash with one another in his chaotically brightened mind. Would he still have time for a new life? What example does he give his children, coming home drunk like this? And does his poor wife deserve so debased a husband? He likes “debased,” and it strikes him as a good definition; it also fits a man on the verge of self-redemption. For example: he will walk in the night until boiling off the most repugnant part of his drunkenness; then he will go home to talk with his wife, whom he respects and holds dear; he is not one of those men who find their wives tiresome owing simply to seeing them every day. In that moment, the din of a passing tram that overtakes him from behind reminds him of something. But of what? He concentrates. My God! Hadn’t he killed his wife precisely that afternoon, striking her across the skull with an iron pipe? The screams. The gentleman makes a gesture of horror, clasping his hands over his ears. He laughs. He’s shrewd. He will not go home. Or turn himself in, or become a monk. The night air suddenly gusts against him. He remembers that he has no wife. So, what use are good resolutions for a man who has no wife? And how could one murder such a wife? Holding steady, insofar as he can, he attempts to fathom why he has no wife. Everybody has one. So what does that make of him, a dog? How did his wife conspire not to marry him? Or is it he who did not marry her? The day before the wedding, she ran away with an heretical priest. But isn’t he that priest? That woman ran away with him? Or with another? Who ran away? “The bitch,” he says, and searches in his pocket for his keys, his eyes wet with tears, as his face curls up in a grin of contempt.

Forty-Three

The lily-animal, properly speaking, is no animal at all; indeed, it is meek, and even benevolent. The lily-animal does not run; indeed, to be exact, it can live out years in absolute and minutious immobility. The lily-animal does not feed on the flesh of living creatures, and all the same behaves as though having just finished its consumption; it is said to have a kind of memory of tastes, which also accommodates a trace of flesh of animal killed and devoured: whereas, having no mouth or teeth, in accordance with its benevolence, the lily-animal would prove completely incapable of consuming the flesh of creatures which have been killed. Yet, notwithstanding these characteristics, the lily-animal is known to students and is classified as ferocious, fast, and carnivorous. The experts assure us there is no other suitable way to describe it, even while seeing that the lily-animal shows none of the typical behavior of ferocious, fast, carnivorous animals. The truth is that it’s common knowledge—whether for scholars who examine the lily-animal in taciturn slides, or from hearsay, and frightened, gluttonous café chatter, no less than among the natives—that the lily-animal must be killed; and that it must be killed precisely in light of its being benevolent, static, and continent. All of the qualities which in theory might make it an innocuous, companionable domestic animal endow it with a fearful potency, ferocious not in spite but because of its benevolence; and those who nurture its benevolence will die of it. So, the paradoxical ferocity of the lily-animal is certain; and it follows that it must be killed. But killing it is difficult. It appears to have no heart to pierce, no head to sever, no blood to spill. Those who have tried with resinous fires—striking it is easy, since, as said before, it does not move—have skewered it but done it no harm. To approach its body and attack it with scissors—but what sort of body does it have?—is a great danger, since at close range the lily-animal can exercise its terrible benevolence. In short, there is no certain knowledge of any sure way to kill it. All the same, the indigenous population suggests the following: shoot off arrows while aiming in the opposite direction; or recruit a hundred youths who, one by one, remaining always motionless, smile at the lily-animal. Or finally—and this is the method most certified—one kills it in a dream, as follows: one takes the dream that holds the lily-animal, one rolls it up, and lastly tears it into pieces, without any gesture of ire. But it is very rare for the lily-animal to allow itself to be dreamed.

Veinticinco and Cuarenta y tres from Centuria

Written in Italian by Giorgio Manganelli

Translated into Spanish by Joaquín Jordá

Veinticinco

No volverá a casa.
