Ora accendi fuochi d’artificio
Dov’era il sole.
***
Anche se non ti piacevo granché.
Era un pan di zucchero la vita.
Rosica, rosica,
più, non ce n’è più.
Neanche un grammo
Per nessuno.
Non resta che polvere
In fondo al cuore.
Un cucchiaino a te.
L’altro a me.
***
Sciocchina, i dottori, no.
La nonna diceva
Tieni la caramella.
È stata in tasca a lungo.
Ecco il tuo sasso. Aspro però.
Se ti viene da piangere, lasciala sciogliere in bocca.
Più piangi, meno te la fai sotto.
Io l’ho lasciata sciogliere.
–
Guarda che ti vedo.
Non la stai sciogliendo.
Prova nell’altra guancia.
***
Soffocare i nostri uccelli uno dopo l’altro.
Canta pure quello che vuoi.
La gabbia del petto è scardinata.
Ovunque guardi,
solo sangue e pelle.
(Con cosa li metteranno?
Ala o zampa?
Dimmi, presto: li mangeranno?)
Fa freddo, amori miei, dormiamo.
Fa freddo nella mente.

Peccato, morirai anche tu. Non potrai restare.
Traversare l’intero ghiaccio abissale,
***
Cosa mi resterà di te.
Il vetro smerigliato di una finestra
Qui tra le costole – brilla all’azzurro.
Strie di sole
su uno specchio gelato,
mio vetro crudele.
È andato a ficcarsi proprio nel punto migliore –
Per farmi soffrire e soffrire, affilarmi
Per bene le spalle.
Un vento che monta dentro.
(alza appena un’increspatura,
Invisibile a occhio nudo).
Ma un giorno, di colpo,
manderà in mille pezzi
sia me
che lui.
***
Cara, tesoro (a lei, non a me)
Non è il cuore la mano, no, la mano non è il cuore.
***
L’acqua lava via
Quel che la bocca non coglie.
Scotta nel rubinetto.
Ristagna nelle tubature.
***
Un, due, tre…
Il treno della metro corre
Davanti agli anni passati.
In cabina il macchinista-nocchiero
tiene il timone.
Nelle palline dell’albero porta
Mentre a bocca spalancata sbadiglia
A Capodanno
cadono tutte per terra.
E lì in mezzo, le mie otto.

In riva al fiume
– Ma no, ancora?
Vale a dire, secondo giustizia.
In arrivo zanzare e villeggianti.
Dovresti saperlo.
Come tutti sanno.
Eh?
– Be’, mica fa freddo, perché fai così?

They’ve dressed the electric fir-trees
And said that spring will never come.
Brother March lies useless,
served a dick on a platter,
While snow keeps falling down in waltzes.
Snow falls in waltzes.
Joy is a ration.
Light the bengal fires now
Instead of the sun.

Even if you barely liked it.
Life was a sugarloaf.
Eaten, eaten.
There’s nothing, nothing here.
Not a gram more
Is given to anyone anymore.
Only dust remains
At the very bottom of the heart.
A spoon for you.
Another spoon — for me.
***
Time peels me off, layer by layer (like the sea).
And eats the empty spider’s chitin.
It feeds the wind as usual: with them and me.
And falls silent forever.
***
Cracks, we have them everywhere.
God knows why, Grandma used to say,
So that there’s enough light in us.
The bulbs inside must be fed.
That Edison guy invented them.
Not by bread alone,
From bread you just get swollen.
Grandma, and before Edison?
Oil or rushlights, I guess.
I finished 8 grades, how should I know?
And who put them in? A fool, well, the doctors.
Grandma said,
Here’s a hard candy for you.
It lay in my pocket for a long time.
Like your stone. Only sour.
Roll it in your mouth if you want to cry.
The more you cry, the less you pee.
And I rolled it.
—
I see you, granddaughter.
You roll it badly.
Try with the other cheek.
***
Let’s strangle our birds one by one.
Sing with whatever you’ve got.
The birdhouse of the chest is torn apart.
Wherever you cast your gaze —
blood and skin.
(With what will they lay us?
A wing or a leg?
Will they eat us right away?)
Feathers are stuck in the throat,
The throat won’t feel better.
So they’ll leave us to live.
You’ll never read this. The white cold has come to the city, raging.
Robert Rozhdestvensky
***
In our city, streetlights stand in snow up to their necks.
The evening sky bends, look, into a bow.
There will be no more snow: “I’m tired, I’m tired.”
Listen, the frosty sky’s crystal is ringing.
Like in mom’s cupboard when a car goes by.
Like our dead have a mouth left:
To drink from glasses, to look — with eyes.
It’s cold, my dears, to fall asleep,
It’s cold in the head.
Cycle

***
It’s such a pity that you will die too. You can’t stay.
To break through the pitch-black ice,
To move a hand.
Your stupid laughter will end,
And the dry sand of your lips.
Salty, like the janitor throws it in February.
Into the phone he says:
“I’ll buy it all for you”.
And starts to cry.
***
What will remain of you for me.
A mica window under the ribs —
flickering in the blue.
Layers of sun now,
where the cold surface lies,
my angry glass.
It settled at its best angle —
to ache, and ache, to hold
my sharp shoulders.
The wind beats inside.
(a ripple is born,
imperceptible to the eye).
But one day
it will break
both me
and him.
***
You don’t hold me in your heart, but in your fist (warmth in the hand).
You only let me out under the eyelids.
(if, when) Angry water roars.
You let me out to move a strand from the face (not for yourself, but for her).
So it gets colder this way.
Darling, my gold (to her, not to me),
a hand is not a heart, a hand is not a heart, no.
***
Ripples on the pond — a trace of a deep fish.
Different from the trace of wind.
Different from drops from branches.
And you and I could have been
to each other
a branch, and wind, and a fish.
But we’ll remain ripples,
a shadow of a cloud on the water.
***
I carried words for you, but didn’t show them all.
On my neck, inside my clothes, look further everywhere.
Hot clusters of pauses and letter-bodies
you would have seen if you undressed me.
But only what the mouth doesn’t take
is washed away by water,
burns through the plumbing,
gets stuck in the pipes.
***
One, two, three.
Past years go by
on a subway train.
The ferryman inside the car
steers the wheel axle.
In New Year’s balls he carries
what didn’t come true.
The balls hit the cold bone of the handrail,
when he yawns and opens his mouth,
On New Year’s Eve
everyone smashes on the ground.
There are eight of mine there too.

By the River
The river has gnawed out a high bank for itself here, overgrown with grass. You can take a few steps down the path and then, not feeling the jelly-like bottom, plunge in. There’s no time to think — you must swim right away.
A campfire smolders in the darkness. Around it, on logs, they sit. Faces changed by flame. The unreliable evening light. Time spent by the river.
— Tolya, throw some wood on, see, it’s barely burning.
An old man in tracksuit bottoms and a jacket worn fur-side out addresses the boy sitting closest to the fire.
— Well what now. I’m sitting so good here.
Grandpa Misha smiles, small wrinkles spread from his mouth to his eyes hidden in a thick white beard.
— If you’re sitting good, then you’ll get up good. Don’t talk back to Grandpa. We take turns. That is, fairly.
The old man raises his finger up.
— The wind has changed, tomorrow there’ll be heat again. Mosquitoes and summer residents will swarm in.
Tolya goes dejectedly to the pile of firewood at the edge of the forest.
Uncle Misha takes a drag on his cigarette. Only a couple of puffs left to the filter.
— Uncle Mish, tasty? When will you finish? The smoke’s on the child.
— Leave me alone, Zhorik, the girl absolutely doesn’t care. Right, Mashul? Why is your dad picking on me? Some kind of angry man he is.
Masha, sitting on her father’s lap, kisses his cheek. He strokes his daughter’s curly head, tucking a curl behind her ear.
— I won’t finish it, Zhorik. You know that. But look at the doll I made. Does she like it? Pull up your child’s sock, be a human being for once.
— This one — father of the year. Well-known fact.
Zhorik picks up a pebble from the ground and throws it at Kolya, who is standing with his back to the fire in just his swimming trunks. Kolya dodges and shows the man two long-fingered figs.
— I like her very much, Grandpa Misha!
Instead of children’s socks, men’s ones are pulled up on Masha’s legs like tights. Zhorik bends down and pulls up the left one.
— Did you have grandkids, Grandpa Misha?
Kolya looks at the old man.
— No. God didn’t give any. Now I have three. Right?
The boy grins and nods. Masha hugs her dirty doll — covered in sand, grass, sawdust. Zhorik is silent, shrugging his shoulders under his t-shirt.
— Well aren’t you cold? What are you showing off for? No one is cold here!
— I feel cold inside. Like a flounder fish.
Kolya moves closer to Grandpa just in case.
— A poet! Well I’ll be… A poet. I just couldn’t figure out who you were. Now I understand.”
Grandpa roars with laughter. The river silently drives water further and further around the bend. A bonfire lights up on the other bank of the river.
— Maybe we should sing. Heyyynnn! One more time!
— Grandpa, when will you sober up?
Zhorik turns away from everyone but sings along anyway..
— Masha, come on. Like Grandpa taught you.
— Eeeeyyynnn! Uuuuukhnim*! Ooonnne more time.
Tolya hears the song. He squints at them and sighs. He goes back to the fire and puts a log on it. Only bits of skin are left from his ears. The fish ate them all..
He turns his head to the river. He sees: a girl is slowly walking towards them. In her tangled dark hair are water lilies and duckweed.
Tolya mutters under his breath.
— Beautiful… damn it. — he waves his hand for her to come up onto the bank. “Comrades! With reinforcements.”
* “Ey, ukhnyem!”, “Yo, heave-ho” is a well-known traditional Russian song
