Ein sehr politisches Gefühl

Mitte September.

Was wichtig ist?

Sie will verstehen.

A thoroughly Political Feeling

Written in German by Lukas Bärfuss

Translated into English by Alta L. Price

Mid-September. The loveliest days of the year. The sky is clear and flat as a mountain lake. The shadows are long, and the sunlight drapes everything in a golden shimmer. As if all day were evening. At twilight, the hydrangeas glow a deep, unreal purple. And then all of a sudden night falls, like a curtain. One gets the sense that all hope was in vain. Summer won’t last.

It now grows colder and conversations grow quieter. Candles are lit once again, and more frequently a pensive silence slips its way in between two sentences. One feels a loss, a quiet yearning, a fearful unease. Does anyone look forward to the dark season? Does anyone still believe it has its advantages? Dictators, perhaps, and a few incorrigible cynics. Anyone with a heart, though, now feels it fill with worry.

It would now like quiet, this heart, it would like to retreat and rest in tranquility. No shouting. No noise. But these wishes will not be granted. The world is loud as ever. The forests are burning. The infection is spreading. Insanity parades through the palaces, and anger seethes in the streets.

Anger. The feeling of the moment. It’s everywhere. Anger reigns. Anger at the stupidity, the self-centeredness, the greed. Anger at the empty chatter, the small-mindedness, and the mendacity. Anger at having no way out, anger at the unfulfilled hopes, anger at the deceit and at one’s own powerlessness. Anger at everything and everyone.

Anger makes things move and change. Anger drives politics. It drives even the comfy middle class out into the streets, the young ones in defense of the climate, the idiots against Covid-19 restrictions.

Anger scrawls protest banners, it bashes shop windows, it chants and curses. Anger destroys and creates, it topples and shoves, it pushes and kills. Anger is the principle of taking action. Anger has decided. It has no doubts. Anger gets it. It knows who the bad guys are. It knows who’s responsible, the harms done, and the means by which to make it right. Anger knows what to do.

Anger can do a lot, but there are things it cannot do. Anger cannot think.

If thinking is the first thing that makes us human, then our beginning does not lie in anger.

At the beginning of human consciousness lies another feeling. A feeling that fits with this season, with autumn. A feeling of and for loss, the sense of losing something, the fear of being unable to hold on to something precious. It’s a feeling for the fragility of everything living. A feeling for time and its transience. It’s an insight that every moment is precious no matter what it brings, whether joy or sorrow. Each moment is precious because it is unique, and will never come again. It arises, exists, and by the next breath has already passed. That is the premise of human existence.

And since the number of these moments any human can experience is finite and limited, and since everything that is here today will, sooner or later, pass by and die, mustn’t every single human constantly ask themselves just what it is they would like to do with the short time allotted them? What is important? And what is worth one’s energy and love? And doesn’t this question inevitably lead to the next thought, the very thought whose resulting insight prevents me from living, shaping, and sharing my life? Namely, why do we so often squander our precious time, waste it as if it were unimportant, pointless, detrimental? Why do we act as if anything can be put off until later? There is no later. Later, everything will be gone, lost, past.

At the beginning of what makes us human lies the insight that everything is transitory. And at the beginning of thought and, therefore, the beginning of philosophy, of politics, at the beginning of art and the beginning of religion lies something that quite certainly is not anger. What lies at the beginning of human culture is grief.

The only strange thing is that we hardly ever see its face.

We are skeptical of how it presents itself, we consider it fussy, of interest only for devotional readings and self-help books. It has been relinquished to the realm of sanctimoniousness.

But since grief lies at the very beginning, why does no one pay it sufficient heed?

Someone who is sad doesn’t need much. They eat little, and desire neither a new wardrobe nor expensive jewelry. They couldn’t care less about the latest trend. No one can sell much to someone who is grieving, unless of course the seller is an undertaker or a scoundrel. Everyone else knows to wait and have patience.

Modern man has, for the most part, given up feeling shame. People cannot afford it. After all, they have to put themselves out there, market themselves, show themselves off from all angles, every muscle, every curve, every scar.

Eyes are everywhere, but you hardly ever see tears on Facebook or Instagram. Tears call for living presence, not detached observation. When someone is crying, you comfort them in their grief. You offer them a handkerchief. Tears affect those who are nearby, who can then bring comfort and peace. But from a distance tears look fake, insincere. And since you can’t do anything, and can’t comfort the person crying, you just feel embarrassed. And then, ashamed, you look away.

And that is precisely the gesture the attention economy will do anything to prevent.

And politics has no need for it, since people interpret the gesture as passive. Grieving people want to be left in peace. They don’t get angry.

That’s why grief isn’t represented, and is therefore excluded from the public sphere; so thoroughly excluded that it now seems almost absurd to bring it out into the open and share it, to make it the starting point for change.

But that is precisely what is so important, so necessary. Because grief may be painful—it casts doubt and raises questions, it gnaws at and torments—but it is honest. It recognizes faux sympathy, false gestures, and insincerity in the blink of an eye. Grief is analytical. It wants to understand. Grief is curious, and isn’t afraid of what it might find. Only in isolation is it dangerous, sometimes even deadly. The moment you share it with others, it becomes fruitful, capable of creating, of healing. Grieving people become keenly aware of how alive they are. Grief leads to caring. Because it senses and embraces the other—you. Only through grief do we grasp that everything we love and need is threatened by transience.

And don’t we all have reason to grieve nowadays? Don’t we all, daily, feel a sense of loss, especially these days? That which mere moments ago was still considered valid and sacred is now just a bad joke. The old sense of security and confidence has been lost. Belief in the binding nature of certain rules and concepts. Faith in the future. Even words are losing their meaning. And with every new technology, with every restructuring, we also lose familiar tools and the places we felt comfort. Not to mention the people we lose along the way, on the road to—well, where, exactly?

Where are we headed? This is the question that lies at the beginning of politics. Through this “we,” politics gives voice to society; it articulates the goal we might set for ourselves.

So wouldn’t it be wise to follow the season? Why don’t we, for once, take our tears out into the streets? If we’re to feel joy again instead of anger, mustn’t we first have the courage to grieve?

This autumn we could, for once, organize our grief and elevate our tears into a form of politics. It might be a quiet kind of politics, but it would also be one of care, consideration, and decency.

Un sentimento molto politico

Written in German by Lukas Bärfuss

Translated into Italian by Margherita Carbonaro

Spinge sulle strade persino i cittadini ben pasciuti.

Conosce i responsabili, l’ingiustizia e i mezzi necessari a eliminarla.

In seguito tutto è scomparso, perduto, morto.
