York to Teheran

I never met my Aunt Ruth for she was taken too young by a cancer now curable. I kind of feel I know her though; her spirit, gentle and creative and kind, emanates warmly in tangible waves from the sepia photos of her, in their silver frames. There’s a saying in Arabic, a friend once told me, about how you only really know someone if you’ve travelled with them.

We’ve somehow travelled together, Auntie Ruth and I, via her diaries of summer 1963.

She was 22 years old then.
It was 22 years before I was born.
My niece is now 22.

It’s funny, sometimes, the family symmetry through generations, the shared geometry with people we may have never met. The dates that dot our lives, echo down the line; the mutual memories, joys and losses carve out a map in time.

Auntie Ruth carved in wood, a decorative art form called marquetry. The name comes from the French word marqueter, to variegate. ‘Variegate’ isn’t a word I’ve ever used, I had to look it up. It means:

  1. to diversify in external appearance especially with different colours: dapple.
  2. to enliven or give interest to by means of variety.Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

This word pretty much describes my family. Auntie Ruth, my mother’s sister was from Yorkshire. Technically I’m half Yorkshire, half Eritrean. My niece is a quarter English, a quarter Thai, and half Oklahoman of Dutch & Cherokee descent. Long story. Old York Minute story.

PIC2

On Wednesday, July 10th, 1963 (which happens to be my father’s birthday, but not sure how old he would have been– Eritrean years, like Eritrean minutes are in a mystical class of their own) Auntie Ruth and her best friend Liz set off on a legendary adventure: York to Tehran.

In a Mini. By themselves. No mobile phone. Un peu de français.

York-Jersey
My grandparents drive Ruth to an airport near Leeds for her flight to Jersey.
Couldn’t find a decent restaurant so had fish & chips in the car!
Reunited with her friend Liz, they spent the day preparing.
The sea is calling but the day’s too cold.
Fuchsias grow in the garden, where Liz’s golden labrador frolics.
Once loaded up with snacks, maps and supplies, the ladies cover 211 miles to Versailles.

Jersey-Cherbourg-Versailles
Nature knows no borders or check-points, really, especially not like humans do today.
Ruth is a farmer’s daughter and can call each plant, flower and tree by name.

Fields of wheat, barley, sugarbeet and maize give way to an enormous palace, immaculately styled with a large rectangular lake and two poplars framing l’horizon.

Versailles-Basel
Basket-making towns with their willow trees.
Cornfields full of poppies and sunflowers.
Blue misty rain, first sign of mountains.

I get the impression that Ruth would have been an easy person to enjoy silence or music with, perfect partner for a road trip. Her notes denote a calmness. Someone clever, graceful. A little shy, but strong.

Basel-Zurich
Everytime the girls get a chance, Ruth cooks a curry. How English!
German and Egyptians boys with guitars sing together in the youth hostel.
Tried to get film for cinecamera.
Marvellous view across lake.
1st tobacco field.

Zurich-Innsbruch-Dobbiaco
Hairpin bends.
Do dreamers make bad drivers?
Pitched tent near picturesque old town, mountain scenery
Pine-forest, rather bare and ferocious.
Gorgeous red and black butterflies

Cortina-Venice-Postumia
Coasting through the plains to Venice.
A dip at Lido di Jesolo–fantastic place.
Souvenirs of glass and silk.
Vineyards, melons in flower.
Breezing along the Adriatic.

Postumia-Ljubljana
Underground caves.
Tunnels and chambers.
Stalagmites & stalactites.
Used by the Germans for storing petrol during the war…
until it was blown up by Yugoslav partisans.

Ljubljana-Zagreb
People harvest with sickles on communal farm Storks. Flocks of ducks and geese. Herds of black pigs.
Monotonous route, occasionally cobbled.

Belgrade
Pleasant city.
Dried cherries.
Yugoslavs are very friendly.

PIC3

Paracin-Nis
Village churches like little mosques
Turkish rule until liberated by the Russians in ‘18
Crossed a very rickety wooden bridge over a red river and saw
Hundreds of people bathing
A Gypsy celebration:
Trumpets and other brass instruments.
All in beautiful clothes.
Men and women with flowers in their hair.

Like a scene straight out of a Kusturica film.
I wonder whatever happened to the film in Ruth’s cinecamera.

Bumpy ride to Dimitrovgrad. Boulders, potholes, dust.
We got stuck. Luckily plenty of strong men there to push us off.
They lifted us up and dumped us on a slightly better bit–
caused them great amusement.
We see women spinning and winding yellow and mauve wool.

Dimitrovgrad-Bulgaria
Customs office with marble benches.
Green uniformed officials with short swords–very smart.
£1 insurance.
Barren mountain slopes.
Kellogg’s cornflakes for breakfast.
Liz saw a black snake.

Plovdiv
Field of barley and tomatoes, large gangs of women cultivating them.
I remember playing a gig in Bulgaria once, at some music festival up a mountain. Too many Brits off their faces made it one of my least favourite travel experiences. My negative memory is assuaged by re-visiting the country through Ruth.

Sofia
Slow.
Saw first herds of black buffalo near the river.
Given some pears by a nice Bulgarian passing by.
Went to a kiosk to buy postcards, but they wouldn’t accept any money–‘gift from
Bulgaria.’ Liz shared her cigarettes all round. Quite a pleasant lot, these Bulgarians!
Noisy thunderstorm cleaned the car of yesterday’s dust.

Edirne
Vineyards, maize and roses.
Mosques again, nice to see them.
Tempting glimpses of the Marmara.

PIC4

Istanbul
Hoş geldiniz!
We tour the city and take a trip up to the Black Sea coast.
Went aboard a Greek ship grounded on the beach being dismantled–built in Hull!
Shown around by the captain of the breakdown gang who spoke five languages. “You have beautiful eyes as blue as the sea of Marmara…”

Grand Bazaar. Blue
Mosque. Bought a saz.
Very thrilled with it.

The majestic treasures of Topkapi Palace.
180 wooden, uneven spiral steps up Beyazıt Tower.

Antique stalls. Turkish paperback comics.
Dinner with musical entertainment- quintet of zither, clarinet, drum, and violin. Istanbul is fabulous.

Auntie Ruth buys a record I love:
Eartha Kitt: “Üsküdar’a Gider İken Aldı Da Bir Yağmur…” Her voice smoulders in any language.

Izmit
Peach orchards.
Goats & Oxen.
Tiny mosques with metal minarets, loudspeakers on balconies.
Camping in a valley.
A soldier climbed a tree to pick apricots.
We sang with some Italians.
Americans have no tact–complaining about Turkey!

Ankara
Not much to see besides Ataturk’s mausoleum.

Şereflikoçhisar
Mud brick houses.
Salt lakes.
Whirlwinds.

Aksaray-Goreme
Steep mountains rising up out of the plain on each side.
Fairy chimneys.
Pillars of soft volcanic rock with dwellings carved into them.
Doors in rocks daubed with street numbers.
Orange and purpley-red, patches almost turquoise.

Ulukisla-Adana-Ceyhan
Graveyards with yucca in flower.
Orange groves.

Iskenderum-Aleppo
Busy port.
Prickly pears, figs & olives.
Such astonishment at a woman driver.

Hama-Homs
Fezes alright here (as opposed to Turkey).
Women in veils.
Delicious meal of chicken, rice with unleavened bread.
Everyone very friendly. Proprietor taught us some useful Arabic words.
ﺷﻜﺮا

Damascus
Stopped at a garage where all were very congratulatory on our journey.
Kindness personified–wouldn’t let us pay for servicing car.
Plied us with cardamom coffee and invited us to lunch.
Mosaics, brocade, copper.
Saladin’s Tomb. Muscley men pummeling ice cream in mortars.
Learned about Palmyra & original Syrian alphabet

PIC5

Damascus-Baalbeck
Mixture of civilisations and religions.
Ruins. Pagan gods.
Roman Temples. Churches. Mosques.

Jerusalem
Reading about the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Hebrew; Aramaic, Greek, and Nabataean-Aramaic
The Rule of the Blessing.
The Dead Sea, 1297 feet below.
Garden of Gethsemane, 900 year old olive trees.

Jericho
Date palms, bananas, grapes, lemons
Beautiful jacaranda trees with orange flowers

Bethlehem
Bought an olivewood New Testament.
Don’t quite know why.

PIC6

Mafraq
Very friendly Jordanian customs.
Took photo of Bedouin gentleman–redbraid, bullets, knife, etc–
He rides a camel but says he left it in Amman!

Auntie Ruth and Liz pick up a Belgian hitchhiker from Antwerp, called Marcel. He’s quite esoteric and mansplainey. He is continuously banging on about ‘The Unique Principle of Yin-Yang,’ and rambling like Jean-Claude Van Damme does in those classic, unhinged interviews. I wish they would just drop him off somewhere.

Baghdad
No such luck.
Marcel accompanies them all the way to Baghdad and Ruth develops a crush on him.

We found a place with live music!
We did the twist and bossanova- 1st time ever done it. Super. What a day! Walked along the bank of the Tigris, lots of cafes with coloured lights
Too exhausted for anything. No yin yang. No positive or negative.

Babylon
Across fertile Mesopotamia. Dates, pomegranates.
Met a Guatemalan who made us some lemon tea.
Babylon boiling hot.
Met mother and child from Colorado, nice fleeting friendship.
Azure gate draped in mythical stone animals.

Iran
Eucalyptus, conifers, palm trees, rice.
Chimneys, chimneys, chimneys.
Super colours of mountains. People sifting grain.
Good feeling to be in Persia at last. First night certainly unusual!

Kermansha-Maylayer-Qum
Using poor Mini like a Landrover. Tempers getting rather short.

Isfahan
Ali Qapu imperial palace.
Musicians’ gallery with special acoustic ceiling was our favourite room.
Mother-of-pearl.
Shimmering fountains.
Fragrant gardens.
Mosque of the Shaking Minarets, Monor Jonban.

Tehran
Modern streets and skyscrapers.
Record-shopping.
Iced chocolate. Jukeboxes. Intricately inlaid khatam-ware.
On the road again towards the Caspian Sea.

Babolsar-Rasht-Qazvin-Zanjan Bostanabad-Tabriz-Marand-Khoy
Purple-blue flowers grown in all villages along the stream
Potatoes, sunflowers, and melons. Very fertile patches.

Maku-Bazargan-Doğubeyazıt-Erzurum-Bayburt
Wild Michaelmas daisies.
Avenues of poplars.
Apples and walnuts.
Wild candytuft and large areas of azaleas among conifers

Trabzon-Giresun-Ordu-Çorum-Sungurlu-Ankara-İstanbul
Istanbul never lets go.
The muezzin call from the Blue Mosque, the moon sitting behind its domes. Bustling Bosphorous, with its ships in the harbour.

İstanbul-Edirne-Kavala
423 miles to Didymoteicho
Acres of mulberry trees in the flat river valley (River Evros)
Must be for silkworms, no signs of fruit and branches only a year old.
Yearly pruning– large clean leaves.

Salonica
Bought some more records.
Caught sight of Olympus.
Olives, figs, apples.
Saw some turtles in an irrigation canal.

Larissa-Lamia-Athens
Rode a donkey to see the monasteries perched up in the cliffs.

Sounion-Nafplion-Tolon
Over the canal at Corinth up into the Pelopponese.
Immediately greener. Citrus orchards.
Talked quite a lot about the revolution the Greeks are soon going to have.
Saw a glorious, pale blue, straight, handwoven Greek dress. Tempted. Tried it on. Bought it.

‘Wolves’ is the word that flags the only danger and fear present in her travel memoirs.
Not the animal– codeword for threatening men.

Disgusting architect!! Absolutely revolting!!! Slept with locked door and knife under my pillow.

Found the word “Okhee” (No) very useful and expressive. Όχι!
So fed up with being called beautiful–wonder where he learned his English. Some book… More proposals and romantic statements about the moon. Horrible!

Corinth-Delphi-Salonica
Enormous dark green dragonflies and grasshoppers.
Perfumed Rosemary bushes.
Beach day.
Lots of fish, some jellyfish, various anemones, no wolves!
Palm trees, dates and shade
Grilled octopus & squid
Many thankful goodbyes

Wonderful chaos of languages when we got to the home. It is run by a man called The President. Very popular with everyone, about 6 foot, nicknamed the President because he judges the dancing competitions held at the cafe most Saturdays.

Talked with American Negro GIs, very interesting and amusing conversation about every topic possible, especially the plight of the GIs in Greece.
Just like an American romantic film.

Titou-Veles- Skopje- Nis-Smederevo
Wild cucumber.
Apricot juice.
Pastoral, grassy valley.

Belgrade-Zagreb-Varaždin
River Sava.
Oakwood forests.
Intoxicating red wine.

‘Wonderful to see Mummy and Daddy!
Got a record in the post: Khachaturian-Gayaneh Ballet suite.
So glorious to be home again.

In Memory of Ruth Bramley 1941-1968
Eternally safe travels, Auntie.

Da York a Teheran

Written in English by Desta Haile

Translated into Italian by Daniela Marina Rossi

PIC1

All’epoca lei aveva 22 anni.

I suoi appunti esprimono tranquillità. Una persona intelligente, raffinata. Un po’ timida, ma forte.

Basilea – Zurigo

Zurigo – Innsbruck – Dobbiaco

Tornanti.
Ma i sognatori sono pessimi guidatori?
Piantata tenda vicino a un vecchio paesino spettacolare, paesaggio montano.
Foreste di conifere, piuttosto spoglie e aggressive.
Farfalle sgargianti rosse e nere.

Cortina – Venezia – Postumia
Vigneti, meloni in fiore.
E via come il vento lungo l’Adriatico.

Postumia – Lubiana
Grotte sotterranee.
Caverne e gallerie.
Stalagmiti e stalattiti.

Cicogne. Stormi di anatre e oche. Branchi di maiali neri.
Strada monotona, acciottolato sporadico.

Belgrado
Città piacevole.
Ciliegie secche.
Gli iugoslavi sono molto cordiali.

PIC3

Paraćin – Niš
Chiese dei villaggi come piccole moschee
Governata dai turchi finché liberata dai russi nel ’18

Strada accidentata fino a Dimitrovgrad. Sassi, buche, polvere.
Ci siamo impantanate.

Bellissimo. Che giornata!

York to Teheran is the winner of “To Speak Europe in Different Languages: Hybrid and Collective Writing Competition.” The prize was awarded during Babel Festival 2020 in Bellinzona, Switzerland. (More on the prize and the winner.)
This week I sat down with my aunt’s travel diaries from 1963, making this piece a blend of my writing and her words. Two journals of inspiration have been greatly condensed to meet the word limit, reliving Ruth’s journey through 15 countries. Leaving from York, U.K, Ruth travels all the way to Tehran, with her best friend, in a Mini-Cooper. A trip of epic proportions, it spans an incredible array of languages, cultures and people. The required element of human hybridization is therefore met by this technically being the combined effort of two people, based on archival material. The nature of the itinerary also involves many different realities- from tongue to time zone.
A horticulturist and visual artist, my Aunt was especially observant of nature, and describes in detail how the vistas vary along the drive. With each border they cross, sense of time and communication change. It is a heady mix, for nine weeks.
There is a saying: “New York minute” referring to a super quick instant, a flash! My parents met in New York but my mother’s family hail from Old York, which has the questionable honour of being known as ‘the most haunted city in Europe.’ Perhaps not all that surprising, considering its violent history from Romans and Vikings to medieval monarchs and highwaymen. With the spectre of Brexit looming, maybe it will be demoted to ‘most haunted city in England.’
What could an ‘Old York Minute’ then be defined as, I wonder? Much longer, heavier than a New York one, and maybe somewhat of a hybrid measurement of time, dimensions. Expandable time, time where alternate planes exist, linking to those who have gone before us, and those still yet to arrive.
