Altopiano dei fuggiaschi

Written in Italian by Fabio Pusterla

«Sotto quale guida, seguendo quali segni? […]
James Joyce, Ulisse, parte III; Nostos, cap. 17, «Itaca» (la casa).

A Pascal RiouPascal Riou è un poeta francese. e Sarah Brunel

Che animale sei
quanti denti hai?

Quali prede vuoi
come squarterai?

Quando arriverai
mi nasconderò.

Se mi troverai
io ne morirò.

*

montando draghi e cinghiali,
incubi truci.

*

Ma qui la terra è umida, sicura,
nera la storia ha insegnato certe cose.
Ugonotti, bambini ebrei, tutto un paese
che accoglie, che nasconde lungo i secoli
per boschi e per ghiacciaie
dentro caverne o nei cuori,
provando a essere giusti, a non tradire.

Sull’altopiano dei fuggiaschi
forse nacque La peste sotto ruote di nibbi.
Poco lontano una chiesa romanica
ammette ogni preghiera e nessuna religione.

molte voci.

Plateau of Runaways

Written in Italian by Fabio Pusterla

Translated into English by Todd Portnowitz

“Under what guidance, following what signs? [. . . ] An unsatisfactory equation between an exodus and return in time through reversible space and an exodus and return in space through irreversible time [ . . . ] The uncertainty of thoroughfares, rendering perilous.”
– James Joyce, Ulysses, Part III: Nostos, Episode 17, “Ithaca” (home).

For Pascal RiouPascal Riou is a French poet. and Sarah Burnel

What animal are you
how many teeth in all?

What prey is it you seek
how do you maul?

When you come searching
I’ll hold my breath

For you to find me
is my death.

*

No lack of reasons to flee.
Never has been.

Those who’ve lost it all those with nothing left
step into the street and take off.
Over parched land or sea, in the belly of a wolf,
down rough and savage trails
and always, at their heels, the grim gallop
of those who come armed
astride dragons and wild boars,
unsparing nightmares.

*

But here the earth is moist, safe,
it’s history that paints some things black.
Huguenots, Jewish children, an entire village
of open arms, with centuries of hiding places
in forests and in iceboxes,
in caves or in hearts,
striving to be just, to not betray.

On the plateau of runaways
it may be The Plague was born, raptors circling above,
and not far off, a Romanesque church
welcomes every prayer and no religion.
To each their own unspeakable story
to each their own allotment of struggle, their private cross.Surrounding the French village of Chambon-sur-Lignon is the Plateau of the Protestants, a vast plateau where fleeing Huguenots and, in more recent times, a number of Jewish children escaping Naziism found refuge. For which reason the village is now recognized as “Righteous Among the Nations.” Albert Camus spent time in a storied residence there, where he may have written his novel The Plague.

The one who spies, the one who snatches upIn ancient Persian mythology, the evil spirit was sometimes referred to using this expression (see E. Langton, Essentials of Demonology: A Study of Jewish and Christian Doctrine, Its Origin and Development, Epworth Press, 1949).
scours the countryside, sniffs through the brush.
But the fields are overspread
with the mirth of manure, wild horses sprinting, children
singing their warning in the chestnut groves.

And the wind, this wind without end,
many voices.

Hochebene der Fliehenden

Written in Italian by Fabio Pusterla

Translated into German by Christoph Ferber

«Unter welcher Führung, welchen Zeichen folgend? […]
– James Joyce, Ulysses, Teile III; Nostos, Kap. 17, «Itaca»

A Pascal RiouPascal Riou ist ein französicher Lyriker. e Sarah Brunel

Was für ein Tier nur bist du?
Wie viele Zähne hast du?

Was willst du für ʼne Beute?
Wie willst du sie zerreißen?

Wann immer du dich näherst,
will ich mich gleich verstecken.

Und wenn du mich doch findest.
will ich darüber sterben.

*

E. Langton, Essentials of Demonology, a Study of Jewish and Christian Doctrine, its Origin and Development.; London 1949, frz.

viele Stimmen.
